It is quite surreal when you witnessed your own daughter falling down 10 steps of stair. It all happened like so fast, but yet it plays in front if your eyes like in slow motion. You feel like you can almost reached over and catch her before she hit the ground. But of course you just couldn't.
Thanks for asking, she is absolutely fine. (Miracle!! Thank you God!)
So here is how it happened:
Time for bed and mommy was counting down for them to go and brush their teeth. Naomi very quickly walked up the stairs, but then found herself changing her mind and shift her body weight backward, like she also wanted to go downstairs. That is when she lost her balance and fell backward, like those little kids who were sliding down the slide head down, face up, accelerated down. Luckily there were two bags of dirty clothes from swimming class right at the end of the stairs, catching her fall. (What's the chance? This is the first time that we have left the dirty clothes there . And the two bags were so fluffy from the 4 large bath towels)
Of course she was balling her eyes out. I put my arm under her head and let her head rest on my knee. Daddy put his finger inside Naomi's palm and asked her to squeeze, and she couldn't. She said it hurt everywhere. We started panicking because her wrist looked swollen and she couldn't move. We suspected a cracked bone or something. We quickly gave her some candy to stop the crying. I asked grandma to bring her teddy after the mood is a bit lightened. We all held our breath when Naomi reached up and grabbed the bear. Woosh, her arms moved with ease. After that I kept joking around with her and eventually everything went back to normal and she was her true self again.
I drew her a card for bravery because it's takes a brave brave kid to stop crying in less than a minute after she fell down the stairs. Good girl Naomi, but please don't fall down the stairs again. Mommy can't take another scary moment like that again.
In retrospect, things that I shouldn't have done:
1. Rush them to go upstairs
2. After she fell down, moved her in my arm before assessing her injuries (in case of neck injury or broken bones)
3. Let her eat candy. (Shouldn't eat if she possibly need surgery)
I guess all first aid course just got tossed out the door once it's your baby. My immediately response was to comfort her immediately and to hopefully make the pain and sadness go away quickly.
Lets all hope that things like that does not happen again.
